ABSTRACT
In Dutch, v and z cannot be at the end of a syllable, and are ‘hardened’ (voiceless) in front of another hard consonant. Therefore, in first, second, and third person singular, v turns into f and z turns into s. Note the differences in spelling in singular and plural in the verbs geven ‘to give’ and wijzen ‘to point’.
