ABSTRACT

The paper is focused on the bid preparation and the construction of the Povazsky Chlmec tunnel situated on the highway D3 in Slovakia. The tunnel has two double-lane tubes of length 2 x 2.2 km, the tunnel was excavated conventionally. The tunnel construction started in May 2014. Due to very short time schedule the excavation was allowed from 8 faces (4 faces from the central pit). The tunnel was opened for operation in December 2017. The tunnel was tendered using Yellow FIDIC Book (e.g. Design and Build contract), therefore contractor was responsible for detail technical solutions. The paper is focused on interpretation of site investigation and optimisation of excavation and support classes prior the bid submission. Consequently optimisation of conventional excavations during tunnel construction is described. In this project, contractual conditions allowed flexible and efficient tunnel construction with benefits to all project partners.
