ABSTRACT

SUMMARY Despite the rapid advances in technology, agricultural methods such as the Green Revolution, financial systems and the development of the ‘global village’, over one billion people on Planet Earth still live in extreme poverty – surviving on less than $1 a day. Although significant aid funding is directed to this area, one of the major issues which needs to be confronted in the drive to eradicate extreme poverty by 2025 is ensuring that the required aid funds and resources actually reach those who require them. As Jeffrey Sach says, ‘We have a problem with the plumbing.’ Regular estimates show that less than 50 per cent of aid reaches those for whom it is intended, there is clearly too much wastage. Addressing this issue, however, provides the opportunity to rapidly increase available resources without increasing funding levels.
