ABSTRACT

Preliminary results of an experimental study regarding canopy flow with foliated flexible artificial plants are presented for various plant densities, heterogeneous vertical biomass distribution, and relative submergences (ratio of deflected plant height to water depth). The dataset consists of a total of 42 experiments and includes turbulence measurements with a 3D-Laser Doppler Anemometer, drag force measurements of individual plants, and a description of vegetation characteristics. Using these experimental data, the hydraulic resistance as well as the flow field within and above the canopy are presented and discussed in light of different boundary conditions and plant characteristics.
