ABSTRACT
Why is a football game preceded by a coin toss? The answer is that this is a "fair" way to decide who gets to receive and who gets to go with the direction of the wind. Fairness is at least as important in an experiment as it is in a football game. If we were comparing the effectiveness of two seasickness remedies it certainly wouldn't be "fair" to try one remedy only on the crew and the other only on the passengers.
