ABSTRACT

Children don't live and grow in a bubble; they are influenced by the people around them and by society in general – but they can also exert influence, by expressing their thoughts and ideas, if reader are willing to listen. Every generation experiences children and young people laughing at the bewildered older generation who fail to understand the things the young take for granted with ease. Although children can be seen as co-constructors and as having voice and agency, it is crucial to acknowledge that in relationships with young children, adults are generally the more powerful and the better able to express their beliefs and to structure those beliefs in a way that makes them seem ‘normal’ to a young child. It is important to recognise the changes that have happened throughout history that contradict the idea of these preferences being innate. At the beginning of the last century, it was common practice to dress baby boys in pink.
