ABSTRACT

Discussions and stories about gender, often featuring people who are trans, are all over the news at the moment, and that conversation has filtered down to early years. It seems like a new thing because the public spotlight is focused on it at the moment, but in fact young children have always discussed gender as they have tried to make sense of what it means to be a boy or a girl. It's also important to be aware that discussions about sexuality are not about sex. Sexuality and sex are not the same, and this false notion has historically stopped people from having these important discussions. Discussions with young children about being trans are not about medical intervention, which is what often worries people.
