ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes a multifaceted approach which aims to share the responsibility for effective communication among the whole context of the workplace, and reduce barriers to employees' participating and accessing skill development opportunities. In essence, an integrated, multifaceted approach aims to provide relevant learning arrangements for individual employees as well as support for workplaces in developing inclusive, user-friendly communication, training and management policies and practices. The chapter explores what this might mean in tangible terms. The main offerings of workplace language and literacy educators up to recently have consisted of courses negotiated with learners to meet their perceived needs. These courses often incorporated workplace communicative tasks or texts but their main focus was developing learner's general language and literacy skills. Experience in workplace education in countries such as the United Kingdom, the USA and Australia indicates that effective programmes involve much more than just relevant courses for individuals in need of language or literacy development.
