ABSTRACT
In [Cities in Evolution] Patrick Geddes displayed his comprehensive grasp of the urban scene and showed how town planning might be seen as something more than technological or aesthetic expertise. Geddes established a tradition in planning which has repeatedly come to the fore over the last 60 years: that of the synthesis in the age of the specialist, bringing harmony and understanding to a physical, economic and social complex which is the city. 1
