ABSTRACT

The onset and course of a psychotic illness can be life changing and have a significant impact on the diagnosed individual but also on their family, informal support networks, and the quality of their interpersonal exchanges. In the first half of this chapter, we seek to provide an overview of the impact of psychosis on family relationships, with a focus on expressed emotion and how it relates to service user and family outcomes. The second half presents new case material from a novel psychological intervention designed to support service users with psychosis to cope with the negative psychological sequelae of perceived negative family interactions.
