ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on expression since the beginning of the last century, many people have held that what constitutes merit in a work of art is expression of feeling or emotion. As for expression, that seems the most appropriate word for the controlled and yet free and creative activity of the artist. The chapter also focuses on aesthetic emotions. All human feelings are grist to the artist, there are two which have a special interest for the aesthetician: the pure aesthetic emotion to which Bell and other formalists appeal, and amusement, or whatever it is which we are made to feel by artists in comedy. The word 'beautiful' of a pattern or piece of music it would be a pleasure to follow that suggests that it is in this restricted use an emotion-word like irritating, frightening and the emotion with which it is connected of course the pure aesthetic emotion.
