ABSTRACT

I believe listening is the single most powerful therapeutic technique at a counselor's disposal. By listening, I mean really listening, to understand the client, rather than listening to change the client. As Freedman and Combs (1996) point out in Narrative Therapy , counselor listening is often driven by some other goal than hearing what the client has to tell us. These other goals might include case formulation, finding hidden strengths, or identifying defense mechanisms.
