ABSTRACT

The objective of the activity is to create a safe place for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community to discuss and share their disclosure process with each other. LGBTQ individuals experience many adversities throughout their lives. Although there have been many legal and societal advances in the acceptance of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities, discrimination and oppression still exist for this population. The activity uses a Narrative Therapy approach to assist LGBTQ individuals in externalizing problematic symptoms through the use of metaphors. Narrative Therapy is a postmodern theory emphasizing the multiple narratives an individual could use to describe their lives. This activity could be used in many different ways with therapeutic groups. Although it is presented here as centered around the disclosure process, this activity could be used to discuss group members' perceptions of many different aspects of LGBTQ identities and the related experiences.
