ABSTRACT

This chapter provides some of the most significant aspects of that agenda. It considers some of the gaps in national policy making which continue to exist, and predict some probable policy themes for the future. The chapter focuses on Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) work will inevitably be a particular school, it is important to reflect on the way such work fits into broader trends and contexts and how that wider framework can be interpreted to aid more effective work at local levels. Whatever reservations might be felt about particular directions and details of policies and legislation, at least the SENCO, and the management of SEN in mainstream schools, are visible in national policy making and debate. Education policy has been the subject of a lot of research and analytical interest, particularly since the implementation of the Education Reform Act in 1988.
