ABSTRACT

This narrative brings both a leadership and a police officer perspective, coming as it does from the leader of Greater Manchester Police (GMP), one of the largest provincial police forces in England and Wales. GMP's budget is over £560 million per annum, and it employs over 7,500 police officers, nearly 700 special constables, and 200 volunteers. Alongside these are over 4,000 police staff who provide professional support to frontline policing. During the last financial year, GMP recorded more than 200,000 crimes and dealt with more than 95,000 detainees at its custody sites. The force takes around 1,400 emergency calls and deals with about 2,500 incidents every day. 1
