ABSTRACT

This chapter draws on the case study of post-industrial Praga districts in Poland’s capital city of Warsaw and it also connects the phenomenon of creative and high-technology clusters with research on organisational cultures. It introduces the notion of ‘the fabric of creative cultures’ to map highly linked connections between creative and high-technology firms with the local neighbourhood conditions. An organisational analysis of firms in Praga that have appropriated old industrial sites is presented. It is argued here that ‘the fabric of creative cultures’ is characterised by high levels of entrepreneurialism, knowledge sharing, fluid organisational structures and a pro-social approach to the workplace. Each cluster reflects the location, history and the social fabric. The research brings new findings evidencing that post-industrialism and social innovation are evident in Warsaw’s Praga. The study is likely to be of interest to scholars, urban activists, creative communities and municipal administrations, where the task is to support creative communities and other urban regeneration initiatives in post-industrial areas.
