ABSTRACT

In this chapter, Risë VanFleet introduces us to Bernard and Louise Guerney’s time-tested, parent-involved clinical model of Filial Therapy, illustrates its applicability to children with medical conditions, and invites us into her clinical work with Leah and her mother who struggle against cystic fibrosis. She illustrates that when a child has a chronic illness, the whole family has the chronic illness. Filial Therapy helps them negotiate the challenges together, and most families who have experienced it have commented that it is the most useful thing they have ever done together.
