As semi-autonomous, SAE Level 2 vehicles are becoming increasingly popular and highly autonomous vehicles are on their way, in-vehicle alerts to convey driving mode or the potential need for a takeover are no longer a simple icon on the dashboard but can include information via a range of modalities. These multimodal alerts can be annoying to the point of having a detrimental driving effect. So, what do drivers rely on for takeover information in simulated and on-road journeys?
