ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the characteristics of female migrants in Bangkok metropolis with female nonmigrants in both areas of origin and destination. It aims to examine the effects of female migration on the socioeconomic conditions of migrants and on the areas of origin and destination. Most migrants are young adults. Almost 60 percent of female migrants were employed at the time of interview. The effects of migration on individuals were gauged by asking migrants for their own evaluations. According to the registration records of Bangkok metropolis, in each year between 1970 and 1974 approximately 375,000 persons moved to the metropolitan area. Female migrants were drawn to the metropolitan area in response to a demand for service and production workers. Regarding the impact of female migration on the area of destination, Bangkok metropolis, it should be noted that the population structure of the metropolitan area had been shifted by the high rate of female migration during the past decade.
