ABSTRACT

Females predominate in the migration streams throughout Latin America and parts of Asia. The predominance of females in the migration streams in the Philippines has been regarded as resembling the Latin American pattern. The striking feature about the study of migration is its diversity. This diversity can be traced, in large part, to the wide range of disciplinary perspectives in the field and to the different levels of analysis that can be applied. Speculation about the causes of migration of women has tended to focus on unattached women who migrate independently. The relevance of urban/rural differentials in employment and income for female migrants, including wives accompanying migrant husbands. The importance of marriage as a means of upward social mobility for women, in both developed and developing societies, has been generally acknowledged. The migration of married women and the migration of women in the pursuit of improved marital prospects are two different aspects of marital migration.
