ABSTRACT

This chapter is aimed at completing the translation of the bilingual dictionary. To know that 'dès potron-minet' means 'at the break of day', is one thing; to know the origin of the term is quite another. If students make do with the bilingual dictionary translation, they are missing a lot! The expressions below represent a highly colourful aspect of the French language and help us to appreciate some quintessential aspects of the nature of French culture. The expressions below were those found during the research and are by no means a comprehensive list of such expressions.
