In the Philippines, I spoke to Hannah Espia, John Torres and Sheron Dayoc. John and Sheron are NETPAC award winners, while Hannah and Sheron received support from Cinemalaya early in their careers. Established in 2005, Cinemalaya is a film festival with the mission to discover and support Filipino filmmaking talent. While its financial support is modest, Cinemalaya opens the filmmaking world to many independent filmmakers in the Philippines. Hannah Espia’s debut feature film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Sheron Dayoc won the Netpac Awards at Berlin and the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. John Torres’ work has been shown in Berlin, Vancouver, Singapore and Rotterdam.
