ABSTRACT
The African Union is an ambitious regional integration project that centres around issues of peace and security. For most of its existence since 2001, the Union has heavily depended on external funding of related activities by international partners, particularly in terms of policy programmes and peace support operations. It is only since 2016 that the Union has adopted serious a reform of its finances, which has the potential to increase ownership of the continental body by its member states and substantially reduce dependency.
