This chapter presents the structural and regulatory evolutions and reforms of the French banking and financial system. The Banking Act of 1984 paved the way for a substantial regulatory overhaul of the French banking system. The Banking Act also created three collegial authorities, whose functioning is tightly linked to the functioning of Bank of France, to provide control for the banking sector's activities: the Banking Regulation Committee (CRB), the Credit Organisations Committee (CEC) and the Banking Commission (CB). The chapter also presents three waves of regulation. First, it presents the situation during the 1980s and shows how European integration influenced French regulation. Next, it details the impact of the crisis on banking and financial regulation and finally presents the French regulatory framework. With respect to supervision at the European level, in France, the Committee on Financial Regulation and Systemic Risk (COREFRIS) aims to ensure the coordination of the various institutions concerned with financial stability.
