ABSTRACT

Fire protection systems fall into two main categories: Systems to assist the fire department; and Systems to assist building occupants. Both types of systems may have manual and/or automatic features, according to the specific situation. In general fire alarm requirements are spelled out in the International Building Code although some provisions are found in the International Fire Code. This chapter helps to understand the use of wet-pipe and dry-pipe sprinkler systems, sprinkler types and finishes, and the impact of sprinkler systems on typical interior design projects. It explains the basic electric and engine-driven fire pumps and their impact on typical interior design projects. The chapter describes the work of hard-wired and networked manual and automatic fire alarm systems and their impact on typical interior design projects, especially in the location of notification devices. It also helps to understand the basic smoke control systems and basic fire protection documentation.
