ABSTRACT

So with my friend schluesselberg I arrived in Berlin; we were both sixteen. In Horodenka, in Zaleszczyki, in Stanislau, in Lemberg, I had been able to look about me, to observe, discover, register impressions, make comparisons. But here I had not come to a city; here a city came over me. Here I felt myself pounced on, attacked, pulled in all directions by a new rhythm, new people, a new language, new manners and customs. I had to hold on to myself, keep my eyes wide open, my muscles tense, to prevent myself from being run down and broken and crushed to bits.
