ABSTRACT
In August 1914, the German politicians reckoned with a short war. Most Germans thought that the war would be over by Christmas; the General Staff assumed a maximum duration of two years. All these predictions proved wrong. The war soon developed into a war of attrition for which no sufficient provision had been made.1
