ABSTRACT

To illustrate the opportunities and challenges of using social media on a day-to-day basis, co-editor Susan Bregman interviewed representatives from six transportation agencies across the U.S. The interviews highlighted common issues, successful practices, and lessons learned. The following agencies were included:

• Washington State Department of Transportation • Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority • Akron-Canton Airport • District Department of Transportation (Washington D.C.) • Central Ohio Transit Authority • Arizona Department of Transportation

These selected agencies include two transit operators, a regional airport, two state departments of transportation, and one city DOT. Each organization followed a different path to social media but they all share a common belief in the value of using these tools to provide information and connect with constituents.
