ABSTRACT

The fluoride intake from food alone in fluoridated communities ranged from 1.7 to 3.4 mg per day, while the daily intake from non-fluoridated communities was 0.78 to 1.03 mg. A study by San Filippo and Battistone with a better method but more limited scope resulted in values of 2.09 to 2.34 mg/day for total fluoride intake. The fluoride levels of the Iowa bone were not really suitable for comparison with earlier bone levels since the hospital records did not give information on how long the patients had lived in fluoridated communities. Evaluation of the possibility that an increase has occurred in the intake of fluoride will be considered under three headings: Food, Bone and Urine. The fluoride intake from the diet of nine children aged 4 to 18 years averaged 0.3 mg/ day. The amount of increase in total intake that might have occurred and yet have escaped detection with the available data is less than 10%.
