ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by amplifying the symbol of the pomegranate seed in Homer’s “Hymn to Demeter.” It then considers several dreams in which figures of the dead offer gifts and messages to the dreamer. The symbols of the fish, the mermaid, red stones, and the spiral are examined in the context of the dreams in which they appear. The chapter also explores the theme of individuation after death and the exchange of knowledge between the living and the dream images of the dead. Works by Jung, Marija Gimbutas, Verena Kast, and Edward Edinger are cited. The chapter closes with an introduction to the theme of farewell dreams, the subject of Chapter 12.
