ABSTRACT

THEFOODSYSTEMLEAVESTHEFARM ThedescriptionoffarminginHootenPagnellinChapter2 containsmostoftheelementsofwhatwasstill,inthe1930s, lookeduponasa'natural'farmingsystem,heavilydependent onthecyclicalandseasonalqualityofrurallife.Animalswere lefttograzeinthefields,orfedonfoddercropsproducedon thefarm,boughtinputssuchasfertilizersandpesticidesplayed anegligiblepartinthefarmaccounts,asizeablepartofthe foodforhomeconsumptionwasstillprovidedbythefarm, marketingwasstillinitsinfancy,andthe'farmfamily'(largely thewomen)processedandpreparedfoodinthehome.Each oftheseelements,aswehaveseen,hasbeenremoved (partiallyorfully)fromthefarmeconomyandrelocated, usuallyinanindustrialform,elsewhereinthefoodsystem.
