ABSTRACT
The present chapter discusses the advantages of utilizing language evidenced in pop culture as the primary data in BA degree thesis projects in linguistics, with a focus on English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students. General acceptance of such data has undoubtedly increased, but there remains a degree of skepticism – mostly unjustified – which nonetheless deserves consideration. I argue that linguistic data gleaned from pop culture is not only worthy of scholarly attention, it demands it. With the proper guidance from a supervisor, it can enhance students’ interest in linguistic topics, facilitate teaching of fundamental methodological issues, and help students to gain insights into larger societal issues – such as the ways in which knowledge and values are constructed and mediated through pop culture. Moreover, such degree-level projects have the bonus effect of allowing BA candidates to take better advantage of the knowledge acquired in their non-linguistics coursework (for example, courses in English literature and culture).
