ABSTRACT
One of the most remarked-upon features of Chinese economic development since 1978 has been the pace at which the People’s Republic has opened up to foreign trade. Western shops are awash with cheap Chinese goods. Foreign direct investment has flooded in. And Western brands are a commonplace sight across the Chinese mainland.
