ABSTRACT

The process of obtaining an assessment begins with a concern that the child may not be progressing normally. An evaluation can be requested by a parent, classroom teacher, therapist or advocate. A family physician, paediatrician or other specialist may also initiate the evaluation process. With a young child, the first step is to inquire about the necessary requirements and the local school district (or education authority’s) special education services. The results of the evaluation may lead to a formal statement of the child’s need for special services and support.
