ABSTRACT

“The formation of the main urban region of Venezuela” reviews the information that has been published about the Center-North urban region of Venezuela and analyzes its history. Since indigenous occupation, this case has been characterized by several conditions that favored its development over the rest of the country, such as strategic position, tropical climate and sea proximity. During colonial times, Caracas and Valencia developed significative importance, but they had little control over the rest of the territory. Only a century after the Independence of Venezuela, some determined national leaders managed to unify the country under the control of Camava. From there, the region would suffer several dismembering attempts that only managed to avoid the responsibility to plan and coordinate it. In any case, by the end of this chapter, it will be clear that Camava has been a more important piece of the country’s government, economy and society than oil exploitation.
