ABSTRACT

Passion to Action fostered engagement with social justice topics in a residence hall at New York University. The Passion to Action program was an experiential learning program that developed undergraduate paraprofessional staff members’ abilities to engage with social justice personally and to implement programs that achieve social justice learning outcomes. Passion Projects tended to be high-quality programs that included specific learning outcomes and good advertising strategies; they were well planned and funded, and focused on the learning goals and resident engagement. The staff commitment to the initiative instilled a greater sense of community and interpersonal pride among the staff members. In self-assessment surveys, the undergraduate paraprofessional staff members demonstrated an ability to articulate how the initiatives were achieving the learning outcomes they intended for their residents. Passion to Action is an assessment challenge because of program outcomes at three levels: department, hall, and undergraduate paraprofessional staff.
