ABSTRACT

Economic inequality, with the magnitude and characteristics documented in the previous chapters, is the result of the four engines of inequality that operate in advanced countries. The fourth mechanism – the retreat of politics – has made possible the unleashing of the other ones through a systematic reduction of the ability of policies to limit and compensate for unequal incomes and wealth.
