ABSTRACT

This chapter believes relevant to the current conversation about expertise. It suggests that expertise is multi-faceted. People can be experts in the same field, but in four different ways, or in a combination of those ways. In the proposed model, knowledge is a prerequisite for all four kinds of expertise. Analytical expertise involves analyzing, evaluating, judging, or critiquing a product or process. Analytical expertise is one of the reasons that many child prodigies never become adult experts. Creative expertise is needed to write music or play music in a distinctive and aesthetically pleasing way. It is needed to create original art or literary works, such as poems, short stories, or novels. Wisdom-based expertise in a sense transcends the other kinds of expertise. The wise expert seeks a common good—for him or herself, but also for others in the field and even outside it.
