ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses primarily on framing mechanisms, as found in the key phrases and terms that signify larger frame structures. It shows what extent Western-in the case of The New York Times, American and British newspapers, media resorted to the use of similar framing mechanisms. Although research has shown that Western media are not a monolithic institution, in the case of The New York Times Operation Restore Hope was covered similarly by both European and American journalists. There were no striking differences pertaining to the frames we identified. The identified frames were of major importance for both media. The military aspect of the operation was overemphasized by both media. This is probably indicative of the importance policymakers and the media placed on the presence of military personnel in Somalia. On the other hand, the term humanitarian registered strongly in the beginning of the operation and slowly declined.
