ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with taking responsibility in coaching, choosing the way forward and owning one’s destiny: the tensions of coaching versus consulting. A case study is presented of the impact of working too hard in a coaching conversation. The chapter also deal with the importance of recognising the signs and finding one’s voice to feed back during coaching. Another case study shows the importance of caring for oneself while working as a coach, and what it means to outgrow a system and feel the resentment that arises. What is it like to say ‘no’ to a client? An example is given of the positive impact of doing so. The chapter also deals with the role of a sponsor and what happens when an ethical dilemma arises because the sponsor expresses opinions and perceptions about the individual to a potential coach.
