ABSTRACT

The freedom of expression (FE) is a fundamental right whose forms of interference occur in various types and degrees in countries of the American continent. The newspapers’ financial crisis has forced a great amount of independent media to close cycles, or else enter into partnerships with large media groups whose interests and political orientation prevail over local needs. In several countries of the Americas, the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression has documented numerous cases of incriminated journalists as well as individuals that take part or witness social protests under different criminal types. In pursuit of FE, several advocacy organizations have focused their efforts on the topic of violence against journalists and media organizations. Progress in norms preventing the form of interference with FE remains confined to a select group of countries that include Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, Argentina and Peru.
