ABSTRACT

The subject of this chapter is Paul’s understanding of the contrast between faith and law as ways of knowing what it is right to do, in other words, of knowing God’s will. The conclusion of the last chapter was that ‘the mediation of law is no longer required in those who have come to faith’. This chapter makes clear the sharpness of the dividing line in Paul’s thinking between the life of faith guided by the Spirit, and life under the law. The tool for discovering this clarity again lies in pursuing consistent translation along with a willingness to see the consequences for our understanding of Paul’s theology.
