ABSTRACT
According to John Brydall, the colonies provided the king with ‘a Magazine of Arms and a Military School or Seminary to breed up soldiers’, as well as giving employment to an overcrowded England. Brydall's observations were mainly directed at Tangier and Dunkirk, but he did mention Bombay as a base from which all India could be taken. 1
