ABSTRACT

United Nations radio broadcasts many programmes on Radio For Peace International (RFPI). The opportunity exists dramatically to expand the coverage of the United Nations and, more specifically, those programmes and efforts that promote a more democratic United Nations. RFPI has received letters and reception reports from listeners in more than 50 countries on all continents. The close association with the United Nations heightens RFPI’s prestige and is helping to lead it to become an information conduit for many of the specialized UN agencies, providing news about health, agriculture, and education, for example. Dr Robert Muller, a former Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Chancellor of the University for Peace, estimates that there were 900 international organizations at the beginning of the century and that today there are 14,000. The citizens of the world are on ‘information overload’ but often do not receive accurate or balanced views of the information.
