The chapter to which these remarks are appended, originally published as Haegeman (1991), investigated English ‘peripheral’ adverbial clauses like those in (1a) and (1b), contrasting them with ‘central’ adverbial clauses like those in (1a′) and (1b′) and analysing the former as ‘orphans,’ expressions that are not syntactically integrated into the host clause in (what is now called) the narrow syntax.
