Frontier Regions in the National Strategy for Development: The Russian View

Frontier regions play the most important role in ensuring security and inter­ national cooperation in Russia. Russia occupies first place in the world with regard to both the length of the state border (60,933 km) and the number of bordering countries (16). Of the total length of the state border 14,509 km are land borders, 38,808 km are marine borders, and 7,616 km are borders along rivers and lakes.
