ABSTRACT

Explanation is one of the most common things people do. Why? What are explanations useful for? In our previous writings, we have looked at how explanations of events index memories of similar past events, causing various kinds of remindings to occur. But we should really look at the nature of explanation itself. Here we present a number of examples of explanations, classify the kind of question each seeks to explain, and classify the kinds of answers that can be given to each question.
