ABSTRACT

The evolving science of biomaterials may result in the design and development of a novel and innovative new biomaterial or a novel and innovative medical use for a previously known biomaterial. This novel biomaterial or novel medical use may provide an exciting and important new method to deliver a biological material, engineer a therapeutic device, or signi cantly improve on the function of a contemporary technology. Consequently, there is an opportunity to obtain a patent on the innovative, new biomaterial. This chapter will explain the basics of a patent, the meaning of inventorship, and the dynamics of the patenting process.
