ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that femocrats have succeeded in expanding the scope for women’s participation. The numbers and scope of women participating in policy making have significantly increased. The chapter analyses how national femocrats and their policy unit, the ‘Directorate for the Co-ordination of Equality Policy’, have developed strategies for enhancing the scope of women’s politics, thus making for increased participation. It explains how the ‘national machinery’ runs, and describes the three major strategies the Co-ordination of Equality Policy (DCE) has deployed in its work: providing the basic philosophy and tenets of women’s equality policy, developing intersectoral policy and setting up a strong women’s movement network. The chapter discusses the femocrats themselves and considers their thoughts on the directions being taken by the DCE. The DCE has put equality issues into specific policies and set up a national apparatus to assist the women’s cause in general, largely through its use of an intersectoral approach.
