ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the generic, as distinct from the ideological, implications of the Bible for Helisenne de Crenne and her letter writing. A good indication that Crenne thought of her letters, generically, in a biblical way is provided by a term which she uses to designate them. As sacred prose songs or cantiques, Crenne's Epistres were truly written for the purpose of praising and promoting the good of woman in her encomium to Judith. Letters, words, the pen do have the effectiveness and the power to bring comfort and salvation and perhaps even to convert the minds and the hearts and souls of those who read them. The New Testament letter with its own "fury of the pen" in the hands of Paul also proved to be a most effective literary form for bringing about change and spreading the gospel.
